Personality: Easy going and generally an optimist, Luffy strikes most people as extremely childlike in his behavior. Despite his humble origins, Luffy is a boy with big dreams. He aspires to become the Pirate King, which requires assembling himself a strong crew, traveling the highly dangerous Grand Line, and finding the mysterious treasure One Piece. Only one man before him has ever managed to accomplish this, but that doesn't stop Luffy from trying. So far, he has a bounty of 100 million belli on his head (300 million later on), which is quite impressive for a pirate rookie.
He's blunt and straight-forward with everyone he meets, and he's honest to a fault. Despite his simple-mindedness, Luffy has a heart of gold and cares for his friends more than anything. He's also a man of his word and sincerely believes in keeping any promises he makes. (His treasured straw hat is actually the symbol of a promise he made with Red-Haired Shanks many years ago.)
Luffy is pretty fearless and isn't particularly bothered by the idea of death. What he fears most is his grandfather, and the mere mention of him will intimidate Luffy enough to stop him dead in his tracks, even in the middle of a fight.
Because he ate what's known as a Devil Fruit, Luffy's body has been cursed with rubber-like attributes. The ocean does not accept those who are cursed by this kind of fruit, so, as a result, he cannot swim. Still, he uses his powers to his advantage, which allows him to throw far-reaching punches, inflate and withstand heavy blows.
